Jazz Jackrabbit HQ - Games - Pre-OEM Screenshots - Castle
A very civilized lizard.

Behold, the purple castle! This color scheme makes it much easier for bats to hide, though the same effect does not apply to lizards. Curiously, in the final version, there were no lizards in Castle. Other things to note are the Blaster icon (bullet instead of Fastfire) and the gem, which is a typical beta style gem. Apparently, at this stage of development, there was no score.
Burninating the castleside...

Another scoreless purple castle picture, but with a few differences. For one, the ammo icon is the red toaster picture, but the ammo is powered up - I guess separate icons hadn't yet been implemented. I don't think this area of the level appears in the final game anywhere, but I could be wrong.
Very low FPS.
Even lower FPS.

Taken at about the same time in development, these two pictures explain the purple castle problem. Dungeon Dilemma (day) was orange, Knight Cap (night) was purple. This also explains why the background is purple in the finished version of Castle Night, despite the dark orange foreground blocks. In other news, you'll see an early attempt to apply different resolutions to JJ2 (some weird resizing), and an early version of the information given when you press F9 twice. Pretty cool stuff. On a side note, the second picture has the Pre-Beta Castle Night palette, so download it if you're curious.
You should have killed him when you had the chance!!! *MAGNETO POWERS*

Castle Night has lost its purple and has gone orange, though the orange is much brighter than that of the final version. (Unless this is Castle Day... the background isn't purple here, but why would the Queen be in the first level?) Here we see Jazz "fighting" the Queen, who is in a completely different battle arena. I wonder what the door is for. There is still no score, and Jazz's blaster is evidently powered up, despite the only Blaster powerup normally being in Diamondus.
If you squint, you can see that it's different...

This screenshot preview (couldn't find a full sized version) is pretty similar to the finished Castle, with a few key differences. There are not supposed to be Walking Turtles in Castle - they only appear in one level of Carrotus. The gold coin is not supposed to exist. Finally, the secret area with a bouncer box in the upper right corner of this area isn't yet created, meaning there's probably no warp in the alcove at the bottom right.
